!!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! and I want to see if I can actually make such a thing. However, I've run into a bit of a snag when it comes to procuring a key ingredient. Apparently most grocery stores don't like carrying peppers that have over 1,000,000 scoville heat units.
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
To put this number into perspective, habaneros and scotch bonnet peppers can get up to 350,000 SHU, jalapeños and chipotle peppers are in the 3,500-10,000 neighborhood, while bell peppers are a solid 0. (There are people out there who think bell peppers are spicy, SMH.)
Now that I think about it, I've never seen these peppers in a store. Maybe that's because I've only regularly gone to grocery stores in the Midwest where such things are too uncommon to stock. This leaves me with a conundrum since shopping at a store seems to be a dead end and I don't personally know anyone who grows ghost chilies.
Ok, I have a confession to make. I wrote all of the above before exhausting my options. Whole Foods will special order it for me although they said that it is contingent on availability. So, I'll have to wait until Wednesday for a mayonnaise status update. In the mean time, I've been learning a lot about barbecue sauce which will come into play later.
I could post the base mayonnaise recipe now but I'd rather have a consolidated recipe when it's all said and done.

I tried one of these ghost chilis. It wasn't as hot as I was expecting, they still are extremely hot, but they don't have a pleasant taste at all.
I wouldn't put them in any food just because they are gross.
Habaneros are much more enjoyable just based off of taste alone.

Is it weird that I wear rubber gloves when handling peppers that eventually go in my mouth?

No. That is very smart. Because I cut peppers without wearing gloves once. Then I had to pee. Then I experienced intense pain. At first I thought I had an STD. Then I realized it was from the peppers and I was really happy. In pain, but happy.

Whole Foods is a solid bet, as is a dedicated spice store. Fiesta (local Hispanic market chain) often has habaneros, so they might have ghost peppers, too.

I ate a raw ghost pepper at work once. On an empty stomach. The mouth stinging was fine, but a half hour later it felt like being shanked in the gut for the next three.

Go to a spice merchant.

Yeah, I like the taste of habaneros. My mom made habanero jelly and it was delicious. I've never had one of these things so I'm interested to find out.

I have Mitch Omer's cookbook (founder of Hell's Kitchen in Minneapolis, really awesome guy and totally my inspiration for cooking) and in it he says specifically not to do that.

I could eat a plain habanero. And then drink some milk. A lot of milk.

I was actually thinking a specialty Indian grocery store might be the best bet. I'm going to wait until Wednesday to see what Whole Foods comes up with. I'll branch out after that.

They have an almost chemically taste to them. I do not like them, but that might be just me.
You dont want to eat more than a small slice or it is extremely unpleasant because of the hotness and the taste.
They are extremely hot, but I don't think they are deathly like the internet hype makes them out to be.
You might be able to mask the taste with the mayonaise/sauce and then it might be enjoyable in reasonable amounts.

That's what I'm hoping for. The plan is actually to make a ghost chili barbecue sauce which then gets mixed into the mayonnaise. I have another recipe that's similar and I should be able to tune it to an acceptable (for normal people) level of spiciness.
I suspect that the barbecue sauce will be very potent though.

FWIW, Amazon sells ghost chilis.

Slightly related, I once had poison oak on my hands and had some alone time. The pain was insane, and despite still being a virgin at the time, I couldn't think of anything else it might be besides an std until I remembered going camping.

I was gonna say, you're Chicago area, right? Shouldn't be too terribly hard to track them down. Pilsen would probably be a solid bet to find them, or yeah, possibly Devon.

You can order them off Amazon, or try Trader Joe's. My friends and I got some from TJ's in college and ate them raw. Terrible idea.

Sounds like a terrible idea. I drive by Whole Foods on my way home from work so I'm going to stop by this afternoon to see if they came in. I need to pick up some other stuff too because I'm making puerco pibil for some guys at work on Friday.
If they aren't at WF, there are a bunch of Indian grocery stores that I could try.
